How to Choose Kitchen Tiles for a Renovation: A Practical Guide

The Role Tiles Play in a Kitchen

Kitchen tiles typically appear in two main locations: the floor and the splashback above the worktop and hob. In both cases, they are subject to conditions — heat, grease, water, frequent cleaning — that affect which materials and finishes are appropriate. Choosing tiles primarily on appearance without considering their technical performance characteristics is a common source of disappointment once a kitchen is in use.

Floor Tiles: What Matters

Kitchen floor tiles must be able to withstand significant foot traffic, dropped objects, cleaning products, spills, and direct contact with heavy kitchen equipment. The key technical rating is the PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) hardness rating for ceramic and porcelain tiles — rated from 1 (light residential foot traffic only) to 5 (heavy commercial use). For a residential kitchen floor, a minimum of PEI 3 is advisable; PEI 4 is preferred for a busy household.

Slip resistance is also important, particularly in a kitchen where spills are common. Tiles are given an R rating for slip resistance (R9 to R13), with higher numbers indicating better grip on wet surfaces. For a kitchen floor, R10 as a minimum is generally recommended.

Porcelain tiles are the most durable option for kitchen floors — they are denser and less porous than standard ceramic, making them more resistant to staining, moisture absorption, and wear. Large-format porcelain tiles (600x600mm or larger) give a clean, contemporary look and have fewer grout lines, which means less cleaning — but they require a very flat, well-prepared substrate to lay correctly.

Splashback Tiles: What Matters

Behind the hob and sink, tiles are exposed to heat, steam, grease, and frequent wiping. For the area immediately behind the hob, tiles must be able to withstand heat — genuine ceramic and porcelain tiles are non-combustible and handle heat well. Glass splashbacks are also a popular choice in this location for their clean, seamless appearance and ease of cleaning, but they must be toughened safety glass installed with a heat-resistant fixing system.

The finish of splashback tiles affects maintenance. Gloss tiles show splashes and fingermarks more readily but are easier to clean because the surface is smooth. Matt tiles and textured surfaces look more natural but require more attention to keep clean in a kitchen environment. Rectified tiles (cut to precise dimensions) with narrow grout joints give a cleaner, more contemporary look and are increasingly popular for large-format splashback applications.

Grout Choice

Grout colour and type are often an afterthought but matter considerably. In a kitchen, grout lines are subject to grease, steam, and food splashes — lighter coloured grout joints show staining more readily than mid-grey or colour-matched grout. Epoxy grout is significantly more stain-resistant and easier to clean than cement-based grout and is worth considering for kitchen applications, particularly in the splashback area where cleaning is most frequent.

Grout joint width should be appropriate to the tile format and the application. Large-format floor tiles with very narrow joints look contemporary but require very careful substrate preparation to avoid lippage (unevenness at tile edges). Wider grout joints are more forgiving during installation but create more grout surface to maintain.

Coordinating Tiles With the Overall Kitchen Design

Tiles should be selected in the context of the whole kitchen scheme — worktops, cabinet finishes, flooring, and hardware. Getting samples of each element together and assessing them in the actual light conditions of your kitchen (including natural and artificial light at different times of day) is the only reliable way to judge how they will work together.

At RCB Design and Build, we help clients navigate material selection as part of the design and pre-construction stage. Getting the material specification right before the order is placed — not after — avoids costly changes once installation is underway. Contact us to discuss your kitchen project.
