Structural works. Engineered properly.
Steel beam installation, load-bearing wall removal, underpinning and structural alterations across London. Coordinated with structural engineers and Building Control throughout.
Structural works require experience. Not guesswork.
Structural alterations are not a place for compromise. A load-bearing wall removed without proper structural calculations and correct beam sizing can cause catastrophic damage — to the structure and to you legally if your property ever changes hands.
RCB coordinates all structural works with qualified structural engineers. Every structural alteration has the correct calculations, the correct specification and the correct Building Control notification and inspection.
We are experienced across the full range of residential and commercial structural works — from single beam installations to complex multi-floor reconfigurations.
What's included
All structural works come with up to 25 year structural warranty
How It Works
The RCB process for this service.
Structural Assessment
We assess the existing structure, identify load paths and determine the structural specification required.
Engineer Coordination
Structural calculations are commissioned and approved. Building Regulations notification is submitted.
Safe Execution
Temporary propping is installed, structural works are carried out to specification with site supervision.
Inspection & Sign-off
Building Control inspection of structural works. All documentation retained for building records.
Planning & Regulations
All structural alterations require Building Regulations notification and inspections. Structural calculations from a qualified structural engineer are mandatory. Failure to comply can result in enforcement action, problems on sale and serious safety risks. RCB never undertakes structural works without the correct engineering and regulatory approvals in place.
FAQs
Common questions.
Do I need Building Regulations for removing an internal wall?
Yes — if the wall is load-bearing (which many internal walls in UK homes are), you must serve a Building Regulations notice before starting work. Structural calculations are required. Building Control will inspect the works. RCB manages this entire process.
How do I know if a wall is load-bearing?
In most cases, professional assessment is needed. Generally, walls running perpendicular to floor joists, walls directly above or below other walls, and walls adjacent to the staircase are likely to be load-bearing. RCB assesses this as part of the initial review.
Can chimney breasts be removed?
Yes, but chimney breast removal is complex — particularly if there are chimney stacks on upper floors or a roof-level stack. Each level of chimney breast must be properly supported. Structural calculations and Building Regulations are required. RCB manages this safely.
What is underpinning?
Underpinning is the process of strengthening or deepening existing foundations — typically required where subsidence has occurred, where a basement is being created or where existing foundations are inadequate. It is specialist work requiring structural engineering oversight. RCB coordinates underpinning as part of broader project delivery.
How long does a steel beam installation take?
A straightforward single-beam installation typically takes 1–3 days on site once temporary propping is in place. However, the full process including structural calculations, Building Regulations notification and Building Control inspection takes 2–4 weeks. Complex multi-beam installations or works requiring temporary works design take longer. RCB provides a clear programme before starting.
