Home Security Upgrades for London Homes

London has a higher-than-average residential burglary rate compared with many other UK regions, and home security is a legitimate and important consideration for London homeowners -- particularly those undertaking a refurbishment or extension who may be temporarily absent from the property during works, or who are taking the opportunity to improve the building fabric and want to integrate security measures at the same time.

This guide covers the main categories of home security upgrade for London homes.

Intruder Alarm Systems

A properly installed, registered intruder alarm is one of the most effective deterrents against residential burglary. Key considerations:

Grades: UK intruder alarm systems are graded under PD6662 (the UK technical specification for alarm systems). Grade 1 and 2 are appropriate for most residential properties; Grade 2 is the standard insurance-approved specification.

Types:

  • Bells-only alarm: triggers a siren at the property but does not send a signal elsewhere. Deterrent value only; not monitored.
  • Monitored alarm (NSI or SSAIB-registered Alarm Receiving Centre): triggers an alert at a remote monitoring centre, which contacts a keyholder and/or the police. For police response, the alarm must be registered with the police via the NSI or SSAIB registration scheme.
  • Self-monitored smart alarm: sends an alert to the homeowner's smartphone when triggered. Examples include Ring Alarm, Verisure, and Ajax. Good for supplementary monitoring; police response requires additional registration.

NSI and SSAIB certification: the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) are the two UK government-approved inspection bodies for alarm installers. An alarm system installed by an NSI or SSAIB-certified company is the minimum standard for most home insurance policies to credit the alarm as a security measure.

Integration with smart home systems: most modern alarm panels (Ajax, Pyronix, Texecom) can be integrated with smart home platforms, allowing the alarm to be armed and disarmed via an app, to trigger lighting scenes, and to interact with access control systems.

Costs: a professionally installed, NSI or SSAIB-certified monitored alarm for a London three-bedroom house typically costs £1,500--£3,500 for installation plus ongoing monitoring fees of £15--£40/month.

IP CCTV Systems

IP (Internet Protocol) CCTV systems use network cameras that transmit footage over the home network to a recording device (NVR) or cloud storage. Modern IP CCTV systems are significantly higher quality and more flexible than older analogue systems.

Key considerations:

  • Resolution: 4MP or 4K cameras are the current standard for residential use -- providing enough detail to identify individuals and vehicles.
  • Night vision: good IR or colour night vision is essential for London properties where street lighting varies.
  • Storage: locally stored (NVR) footage is not accessible from outside the network unless configured; cloud storage provides remote access but may raise privacy questions.
  • Camera positions: front door (for visitor recording and package theft), rear garden (for rear access), and any outbuildings with valuables. In London terraces, a camera covering the front door and the approach from the street is often the highest priority.

Costs: a four-camera IP CCTV system (supply, installation, wiring, NVR, and commissioning) for a London house typically costs £1,500--£4,000. Individual smart doorbell cameras (Ring, Google Nest) are typically £150--£350 self-installed.

Smart Locks and Access Control

Smart locks allow keypad, smartphone, fob, or fingerprint access in addition to (or instead of) a key. For London homes, the main applications are:

  • Front door smart lock: allows keyless entry for household members and temporary code-based access for cleaners, contractors, or guests. Brands widely used in London residential include Yale, Ultion Smart, and Nuki.
  • Key safe: a code-accessed mechanical key safe is simpler and more reliable than a smart lock. A Secured by Design-approved key safe (such as Sentinel or Supra) is recommended.
  • Video doorbell: video doorbells (Ring, Google Nest Doorbell, Eufy) provide real-time video and audio communication with visitors, and motion-triggered recording. They require a wired or rechargeable power supply and a WiFi connection.

Smart lock costs: a good residential smart lock (supply and install) typically costs £350--£900 depending on the specification.

Secured by Design

Secured by Design (SBD) is the official police security initiative managed by ACPO Crime Prevention Initiatives. SBD-approved products have been tested to recognised security standards. Key SBD requirements for residential properties:

  • Front and back doors: PAS 24-tested doorsets (see the front door guide)
  • Windows: PAS 24-tested windows (see the window guide)
  • Locks: BS 3621 five-lever mortice deadlocks or PAS 24 multipoint locking systems
  • Lighting: adequate external lighting to illuminate approach routes (automatic PIR-triggered is preferred)

Achieving Secured by Design certification for a new London property or significant refurbishment can benefit insurance premiums and is a requirement on some London residential development planning conditions.
