Why Sound Is a Problem in London Homes
London's dense housing stock — Victorian terraces, converted flats, and houses close to busy roads and transport infrastructure — means sound transmission is a genuine quality-of-life issue for many residents. Whether the source is traffic, neighbours through a party wall, footfall from the flat above, or noise bleeding between rooms in a shared house, improving acoustic performance can make a meaningful difference to how a home feels.
Effective soundproofing requires understanding what type of sound you are trying to address, because the solutions differ depending on whether the problem is airborne noise (voices, music, television) or impact noise (footsteps, objects dropped on hard floors).
Airborne vs Impact Sound
Airborne sound travels through the air and then causes a structure to vibrate, transmitting sound to adjacent spaces. Examples include conversation through a party wall, music from a neighbouring flat, and traffic noise through windows. The primary defence against airborne sound is mass — heavier, denser structures transmit less airborne sound — and acoustic decoupling, which interrupts the path through which vibration travels.
Impact sound is caused by direct mechanical contact with a structure, typically footsteps or objects falling on a floor. It is transmitted directly through the structure as vibration, bypassing the air path entirely. Impact sound is often the harder problem to solve because it bypasses mass-based solutions. Resilient layers, soft floor finishes, and decoupled ceilings are the main tools.
Improving Party Wall Performance
The building regulations in England and Wales set minimum standards for sound insulation in new builds and conversions under Approved Document E. These require separating walls to achieve a certain level of airborne sound insulation and are tested at completion. Existing properties built before these standards were introduced may perform significantly worse.
To improve party wall acoustic performance, the main approach is to add an independent wall lining on the inner face of the party wall, built on resilient channels or using acoustic studwork, with multiple layers of dense acoustic plasterboard and acoustic quilt within the cavity. This adds mass and decouples the lining from the structural party wall, significantly reducing airborne sound transmission.
It does reduce room width, typically by seventy to one hundred millimetres, which is a meaningful trade-off in smaller rooms.
Improving Floor/Ceiling Performance
In converted flats or houses converted to HMOs, sound between floors is a major issue. To address airborne sound through the floor, adding mass is the priority — a concrete screed, acoustic boarding, or additional joist depth with acoustic quilt can help. For impact sound from above, a floating floor on an acoustic mat layer, or a resilient ceiling below, is more effective.
A decoupled ceiling — built on resilient bars attached to the joists, with acoustic quilt above and multiple layers of dense plasterboard below — is one of the most effective interventions for impact noise from the floor above. This also reduces the floor-to-ceiling height below, which must be considered in the design.
Windows and External Noise
For properties near busy roads, railways, or Heathrow's flightpath corridors, secondary glazing is often more effective than double glazing for acoustic improvement. The reason is air gap depth — acoustic performance improves significantly with the gap between panes, and a secondary glazing system can achieve a much larger gap than a standard sealed double-glazed unit.
For properties in conservation areas where altering window appearance would require planning permission, secondary glazing added on the inner face is often the only viable option and can achieve very significant noise reduction when properly designed and fitted.
Acoustic Design as Part of a Refurbishment
Acoustic improvements are most efficiently incorporated as part of a wider refurbishment project, when walls and ceilings are already being stripped out and floors are being renewed. Adding acoustic treatment to an otherwise finished room means accepting the disruption and cost of stripping back completed finishes. Planning acoustic upgrades at the refurbishment design stage is far more cost-effective.
