How to Soundproof a Room in Your Home

Noise between rooms and from neighbours is one of the most common quality-of-life complaints in London homes — particularly in Victorian and Edwardian terraces where walls are single-brick and floors are suspended timber with minimal acoustic separation. Here's what actually works when soundproofing, and what the practical and cost implications are.

Understanding How Sound Travels

Sound travels through two mechanisms: airborne sound (voices, music, TV — transmitted through the air and through gaps and lightweight structures) and impact sound (footsteps, dropped objects — transmitted through the structure itself). Effective soundproofing usually needs to address both, and the dominant mechanism in your situation determines the most effective solution.

In party walls between London terraced houses, the predominant issue is usually airborne sound transmission through a relatively thin solid structure. In internal floors between storeys, impact sound from footsteps above is often the dominant complaint.

Party Wall Soundproofing

Adding acoustic mass and decoupling the internal wall from the party structure are the two most effective approaches:

Independent stud wall. Building a new stud wall slightly away from the party wall (leaving an air gap), lining it with acoustic plasterboard (higher mass than standard board), and filling the cavity with mineral wool acoustic insulation. This is highly effective but reduces the room's floor area by typically 100–150mm.

Direct bonded acoustic system. Acoustic resilient bars or clips fixed to the party wall, with acoustic plasterboard attached to the bars (rather than directly to the wall). The resilient fixings decouple the board from the structure, reducing the transmission of vibration. Less loss of floor area than an independent stud wall, but slightly less effective.

Floor Soundproofing (Between Storeys)

From above (lifting the floor). The most effective intervention is to the floor itself: acoustic resilient underlays, floating floor constructions, or a layer of acoustic quilt between the structural floor and the finished floor. This requires lifting and relaying the floor covering but is the highest-performing solution for impact sound.

From below (ceiling treatment). Where lifting the floor above isn't practical, a suspended acoustic ceiling below — with acoustic mineral wool in the new ceiling cavity — provides meaningful airborne sound improvement but is less effective for impact sound.

What Doesn't Work

Thin acoustic foam panels (the type sold on consumer websites). These absorb sound within the room (reverberation control) but have minimal effect on transmission between rooms or through party walls. They are a room treatment product, not a soundproofing product — don't confuse the two.

Soundproofing in a renovation context is most effective when addressed as part of a broader refurbishment — when walls and floors are already being opened up, the cost of adding acoustic treatment is modest. Retrofitting acoustic measures into a finished room is significantly more disruptive and expensive.
